Glassboro Unveils New Event: The Art Walk & Night Market on October 4th
Unleash your inner artist at this free, family-friendly and interactive event.
GLASSBORO, NEW JERSEY --- The Borough of Glassboro is excited to introduce the Art Walk & Night Market, a brand-new community event happening in Town Square on October 4 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This creative celebration will feature live art demonstrations, unique showcases, and engaging performances designed to inspire attendees of all ages.
Walk in an artist’s shoes down the Art Mile, featuring iconic murals, memorials, and artistic installations throughout Downtown Glassboro. The mile stretch of road will take participants through Glassboro Town Square and down High Street through seven total spots, each ripe with artistic inspiration.
The Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum will exhibit iconic artist Vanessa German’s “Breathe from the Diaphragm: our eyes are our lungs.” With work focused on themes of selflessness, love and healing, the installations will resonate with all guests along the Art Mile during the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Within the heart of Downtown Glassboro, just off Town Square, lies the “Glassboro Bronze Statue” (commissioned in 2018) which directly ties Glassboro to its early history with glass manufacturing. Town Square is also home to Glassboro’s Veteran Memorial Plaza and Art Garden. While the Memorial Plaza stands as a tribute to Glassboro’s fallen heroes, The Art Garden recognizes Glassboro’s late mayor, Alvin Shepeen, who was instrumental in the revitalization of the community.
Along West High Street, “Glassboro Legacy Mural” (commissioned in 2019), highlights the iconic figures, places and events from Glassboro’s history. In 2017, a collaboration between Creative Glassboro, Mosaic Family Success Center, Rowan University and world renown artist, Isaiah Zagar, created the “Isaiah Zagar Mosaic Mural”, currently on the face of Glassboro Center on East High Street.
The Heritage Glass Museum is a community non-profit that collects and preserves historic southern New Jersey glass works, artifacts and documents. Their partnership with Rowan University’s Art Gallery and Museum cumulates in “Realms Within: The Artistry of Paul Stankard” which blends the botanical and mystical within glass arts. Between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., guests can explore the evolution of Stankard’s overall impact on contemporary glass art through his glass flora, forever suspended in time.
“It is an honor to recognize the artistic installations throughout the Borough through the Art Mile. It’s of the utmost importance to celebrate and take pride in our community,” says Council President, Anna Miller. “Each installation represents our rich history, commitment to community, and the Spirit of Glassboro.”
Attendees are welcome to join in the artistry themselves throughout the event. In collaboration with Rowan University’s Marie Rader Presenting Series, Rennie Harris RHAW’s performance and demonstration invites every guest to unleash their creative spark. This iconic company strives to encourage youth through Hip-hop and Street Dance theater. Their highly anticipated performance, Continuum, showcases and celebrating various street dance styles throughout history. Following their performance, Rennie Harris RHAW invites attendees to move to the beat in an interactive dance demonstration, appropriate for all ages and people of all dance levels.
“The Marie Rader Series at Rowan University is committed to uplifting our local communities through world-class performing artist engagements. Rennie Harris’ legacy is built on bringing street dance to the concert stage while also maintaining grassroots outreach through RHAW--a powerful example of how the arts can not only build bridges but also provide life-saving inspiration and opportunities for moving through struggle,” says Debbie Shapiro, Artistic Director of the Marie Rader Presenting Series. “It is an honor to share this company with the attendees of Downtown Glassboro’s upcoming Art Walk."
The dazzling Night Market portion of the festival features over 20 local artisan vendors. These professional creatives and emerging artists express themselves across several different disciplines, making the Night Market full of artistic variety. Several vendors, such as MakerStudio at Gloucester County Library System, also invite guests to create alongside professionals through wearable jewelry and zine booklets.
