Introducing the Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshall, John J. Tedeschi, Sr.
John J. Tedeschi, Sr. was the sole son in his family, a lineage marked by a legacy of military service and sacrifice. His namesake, Uncle John, was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, while another uncle sustained severe injuries, losing both an eye and a leg. Given this legacy, there was no question in John’s mind about fulfilling his duty when he was drafted.
John, a native of Philadelphia from the Callowhill neighborhood, was drafted into military service on January 3, 1967. Ready to embark on his military journey, Tedeschi departed 20th Street Station headed for Fort Bragg, NC where he completed basic training.
By May 15th, John arrived in Vietnam, prepared to fulfill his military obligations. He was stationed in the I Corps Tactical Zone, the northernmost region of South Vietnam, which shares a border with North Vietnam. John served in the 34th Supply and Service Battalion, providing direct support to operations in the area.
After a year of service in Vietnam and successfully completing four campaigns, John was honorably discharged from the Army on December 18, 1968.
As a member of his battalion, John received the Meritorious Unit Commendation for his exceptional logistical support to combat operations throughout the I Corps Tactical Zone. His contributions were instrumental in ensuring the success of various missions in a challenging environment.
Throughout his service in Vietnam, John was awarded several medals, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, the Meritorious Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze service stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device, and the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. These honors reflect his commitment and dedication to duty during a pivotal time in history.
In recognition of his commitment to fellow veterans, he became a member of the United Families of Vietnam Veterans. His dedication to this cause was further acknowledged when he was inducted into the Chapel of the Four Chaplains on October 18, 1987, honoring his significant contributions to the organization and the veteran community.
John currently serves as the Senior Vice-Commander of Glassboro VFW Post 679 and is a former President of the South Jersey Vietnam Veterans Association.
In his capacity with these organizations, he has dedicated his time to volunteering at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home and participating in numerous Stand Downs, where he assists fellow veterans by providing clothing, food, and guidance on accessing essential services.
Additionally, John has collaborated with The Angels Community Outreach to support children and families within the local community. He is an active participant in annual events such as the Glassboro Memorial Day Parade, Summer Fest in Glassboro, and the St. Anthony's Italian Heritage Festival.
Every week, John volunteers to call Bingo at Post 679 and plays a crucial role in setting up for various events and charity functions held at the Post Hall.
Furthermore, he is a proud member of both DAV Chapter 80 and American Legion Post 241, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to serving veterans and the community at large.
