Seward Johnson Sculptures Bring Interactive Public Art Experience to Downtown Glassboro

“Recreate the Sculptures” Contest Invites Community to Engage, Explore, and Win

Glassboro, NJ—Explore five new Seward Johnson sculptures throughout Downtown Glassboro. To celebrate the installation, community members are invited to participate in a fun and interactive contest by recreating the sculpture poses for a chance to win gift cards to Glassboro restaurants.

Visionary and world-renowned artist Seward Johnson is known for life-size sculptures, depicting scenes of everyday life. His work sparks curiosity, invites discovery, and transforms often overlooked public spaces into engaging artistic experiences. Though Johnson passed away in 2020, his legacy continues to inspire communities through installations like this one.

This latest installation reinforces Glassboro’s identity as a community that embraces and celebrates the arts, made possible through a partnership with Nexus Properties, which funded the sculptures.

“This installation is a wonderful example of how public art can bring people together and energize our downtown,” said Mayor John E. Wallace III. “We’re proud to have a partner like Nexus Properties to provide an engaging experience that celebrates creativity, supports our local businesses, and invites residents and visitors to explore all that Glassboro has to offer.”

Families can interact with “Attic Trophy” featuring a young girl hula-hooping in Glassboro Town Square, near the Veterans Memorial, or “Oops,” where visitors can “help” a painter clean up a bright yellow spill near the fountain. At the corner near LaScala’s Fire Glassboro, discover the charming hot dog cart scene in “Relish, Too?” Across from Town Square at the offices at Nexus Properties, step into “The Photo Shoot,” or experience the emotional reunion depicted in “Contact” near Inspira Primary Care.

Presented by Nexus Properties, the Seward Johnson sculptural installations will remain in Downtown Glassboro through the fall.  This marks the fourth installation of rotating Seward Johnson sculptures throughout Downtown.

“This installation reflects our continued commitment to investing in a vibrant, walkable downtown where art, community, and local business come together,” said Dante Germano, COO of Nexus Properties. “We are proud to partner with the Borough of Glassboro to bring these Seward Johnson sculptures to life in a way that encourages exploration, interaction, and a shared sense of place for residents and visitors alike.”

To enter the “Recreate the Sculptures” contest, participants must follow @nexusglassboro and @glassboro.new.jersey on Instagram, then snap a photo recreating one of the sculptures. Entries can be submitted via direct message on Instagram or Facebook. For an additional entry, participants can post their photo, tag both accounts, and use the hashtag #glassboroarts.

The deadline to submit entries is Sunday, May 3rd. Three winners will be selected and announced via social media on Monday, May 4th. The first-place winner will receive a $50 gift card to LaScala’s Fire Glassboro. The second-place winner will receive a $25 gift card to Mexican Mariachi Grill. The final third-place winner will receive a $15 gift card to Cream Café.

Visitors are encouraged to experience the Seward Johnson Sculptures Walking Tour using the free, interactive map available through Nexus Properties at nexusglassboro.com/seward-johnson.

Glassboro Town Square serves as a central hub for the installation, with sculptures located throughout the surrounding downtown district. For more information on public art and cultural initiatives in Glassboro, visit the Borough of Glassboro Arts page at www.glassboro.org/arts.
