After a distinguished career in both public service and in the private sector, former Mayor Leo McCabe of Glassboro has passed away, surrounded by family.

“Leo McCabe spent 17 years reshaping Glassboro into the city we know. Even if you didn’t know his name, you saw and experienced the significant ways he made our Borough better. Leo was integral to the revitalization of downtown Glassboro and successfully led our Council and all Borough departments to expand Glassboro’s significant regional impact,” said current Mayor John E. Wallace III. "Not only was he an incredibly humble man, he was also a civic leader who was a champion for human rights and civil harmony. We will be forever in his debt.”

Glassboro completes final phase of Town Square with Public Restroom Facilities and State-of-the-art Water Feature

It has been almost 120 years since the Glassboro Public Fountain was installed between the intersection of Academy and State Streets. It was placed on July 10, 1900. It was a drinking fountain that doubled as a lamp post. Since that fountain was placed before the time of automobiles, it faced many dangers as technology advanced and was relocated on South Academy Street after 21 years and being struck four times by automobiles. Several years later it mysteriously disappeared, and was never seen again.

The public fountain had a special significance in Glassboro’s past and during the summer of 2019 its long awaited replacement was installed in anticipation of Glassboro’s 100th Year Anniversary of incorporation scheduled for 2020. Glassboro was incorporated as a borough on March 18, 1920, replacing Glassboro Township.

“The Annual Italian Festival is cherished in Glassboro, and for good reason. Our festival is like no other and celebrates our community of many Italian families. Downtown Glassboro is one of the most popular destinations in South Jersey and we are delighted to join residents and visitors in this annual tradition of amazing food, great music, and Italian Heritage,” said Councilwoman Daniele Brida Spence. “This year's festival will offer a full spectrum of events and activities for all ages; Italian food, wine competition, cannoli eating contest, artisan vendors, and a full schedule of authentic Italian performances by new entertainers as well as local favorites.”

The 15th Annual Glassboro Car Show & Food Truck Festival drives into Glassboro August 30, 2019.

The car show will be located in Downtown Glassboro and the Town Square, Glassboro, New Jersey. The show will be start at 5 pm. The show will end at 9pm. This is a free family fun event and there is something for every gear head or casual admirer. On display will be restored vehicles representing all decades of automotive history as well as exotics, EV’s, and motorcycles. Food vendors will be on site selling food and non- alcoholic beverages. Landmark Americana will host two Beer Gardens. There will be plenty of free parking at the event with signage and parking attendants to direct attendees. This is a rain or shine event.

“Each year, our goal is to grow the selection vehicles that are all-new to the show and match the passions of our attendees,” said Council President George Cossabone, Sr. “For our younger attendees the passion for cars and motorcycles starts very early, so it was important to us to provide a wealth of fun activities for kids—the drivers of the future. These new attractions will entertain and inspire children, while also providing them with opportunities to learn about the rich history and legendary fanfare of iconic automotive brands.”

The second annual Borough Of Glass Festival ArtWalk and Night Market celebrates Glassboro’s namesake industry.

To commemorate our rich history of glass blowing, on July 20, 5-10 PM, we will host the “Borough of Glass Festival Art Walk and Night Market.” This art festival and market will be marked by dozens of artists selling and performing demonstrations of their unique crafts.

“We are excited to continue growing the Borough of Glass Festival as a destination for makers of all ages.” Said Council President George Cossabone, Sr. “Glassboro has created this festival for artists of all disciplines to be able to showcase and demo their craft in our beautiful downtown making this a memorable weekend for everyone.”

This inspiring festival will include dozens of local and area glassblowers, sculptors, painters, and potters plus a multitude of other hand-crafters that will offer their items for sale and be demonstrating their skills and artisanship right before your eyes!

The night market offers visitors the chance to browse a variety of goods while basking in a festival atmosphere full of great food, craft beer, and other al fresco fun on Rowan Boulevard and the Town Square while live entertainment is provided by headliner The Jump Off Band, a Philadelphia power band.

Glassboro's Annual CommUnity Day will take place Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Town Square. Over 2,000 people are expected for games, food, community information, and entertainment.

GLASSBORO REQUESTS EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FROM NATIONAL ARTISTS.

To commemorate this history, the Borough has issued a Request for Expression of Interest for artists to apply. Specifications and application process are available at glassboro.org/bidsrfprfq until June 6, 2019.

The mural site will be on the exterior wall of a restroom pavilion on the South side area of the Glassboro Town Square visible from High Street.

“It's impossible to overstate the importance of dedicating space for the arts and entertainment district to thrive,” said Glassboro Councilwoman Daniele Spence. “We are committing space, resources, funding and ongoing efforts to meet the unique needs of artists from the area. We need to allow their creativity to inspire us in our development of our downtown’s image.”

The Borough’s tactical proficiency and fortitude combined with the Glassboro Public School District personnel, most notably Superintendent Dr. Mark J. Silverstein, Chief Academic Officer Danielle Sochor, and Glassboro High School Principal Dr. Danielle Sneathen, proved to be determining factors in quickly disseminating public information and providing care and shelter for students and residents that were evacuated to safety. The Creative Glassboro Arts Advisory Board is offering a $1,000 scholarship to Glassboro High School Seniors who will graduate at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

Glassboro High School Seniors proficient in performing arts or visual arts are encouraged to apply. The scholarship submission consists of a completed application form, two (2) examples of your own artwork, a letter of recommendation, and an artist’s statement.

The Gloucester County Habitat for Humanity is currently working on two different projects in Glassboro, New Jersey. One house is on Truman Avenue, the other is on East Boulevard, next to another home that was already built in 2010.

The active projects in Glassboro are being worked on by a core group of fifteen to twenty volunteers. Due to the cold weather approaching, the volunteers will be working on the inside of the house and then finish the outside once spring comes. These two projects are both projected to be complete by August of 2019.

U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced that Robins’ Nest, Inc. in Glassboro, New Jersey has been awarded a $2,000,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

“Every single day, at least one person in my district alone is dying from the disease of addiction, and we need to do everything we can to improve the recovery process and help those who are suffering,” said Congressman Donald Norcross, a Vice-Chair of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic. “I’m proud to have supported this grant that will help change lives in South Jersey. With the leadership of organizations like Robins’ Nest, we will continue to work together to provide affordable housing, combat homelessness and help our neighbors, friends and loved ones who are struggling with addiction.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with SAMHSA on the development of our Recovery and Housing Program,” said Dr. Anthony DiFabio, Robins’ Nest Chief Executive Officer. “This is a much-needed care model for those who are not only battling substance abuse, but also the exacerbating life factors which may be inhibiting their recovery journey.”

“We’ve designed the Recovery and Housing Project to support recovery by addressing the many barriers that may exist, including housing, and access to care and supports,” said Melissa Fox, Robin’s Nest Chief Operating Officer. “The program was envisioned to not only support the individual, but also their family by providing a trauma-informed, therapeutic context using a wraparound service modality.”
